Animal systems

In traditional societies, no part of the animal was wasted.
The life taken was respected through maximising productive potential.

Animal systems in permaculture are:
humane
energy efficient
integrated with plant production systems
multifunctional
environmentally responsible
Animal systems are useful for:
waste conversion
nutrient cycling
breed conservation
providing companionshiptreated with respect

1. Know your animal
know the origins, biology, ecology.
characteristics, breeds
forage ability
resilience
predators
contraindications
housing, fencing requirements
environmental impact
feral potential
care and handling required
water and food requirements
social needs
population, stocking rates over the seasons etc



2. What can the animal do?
for the systems - functions
for you - yields
what does it consume / produce


3. Ensure the system is ready before introducing the animal
water supply
forage and fodder
housing and shelter
fences and containment
microclimate

4. Take responsibility
caring
maintenance
monitoring
management
